Phthalates — commonly used as fragrance fixatives — are known endocrine disruptors. Some synthetic musks accumulate in human tissue. Some aromatic compounds are respiratory irritants.

IFRA stands for the International Fragrance Association. IFRA sets safety standards for fragrance compounds used in consumer products — restricting or banning specific ingredients based on safety data, and setting maximum usage levels for different product categories.
