What's in Dawn
Dawn's primary active ingredient is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) — a synthetic surfactant derived from petroleum or palm oil depending on the formula. Alongside that you'll find sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), synthetic fragrance (which can contain hundreds of undisclosed chemicals under one word), methylisothiazolinone (a preservative flagged as an allergen and potential neurotoxin), and synthetic blue dye that serves zero cleaning purpose.
None of these ingredients are required to clean dishes effectively. They're in the formula because they're cheap, they create satisfying lather, and the blue color makes the product look clean and clinical.
What's in Rooted Essentials Dish Soap
Our dish soap uses: Decyl Glucoside (coconut-derived primary surfactant), Capryl/Caprylyl Glucoside (coconut-derived degreaser), Coco Glucoside (coconut-derived lather and viscosity), Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (coconut-derived grease cutter), Vegetable Glycerin (skin conditioning), Sodium Citrate (pH buffer), Citric Acid (pH adjustment), and Optiphen Plus (preservative system).
Every ingredient is disclosed. Every ingredient has a purpose. And every ingredient is plant-derived or mineral-derived — nothing synthetic, nothing hidden.
The Performance Test
Does it cut through grease? Yes. The SCI + triple glucoside system we use delivers Dawn-level degreasing performance using 100% coconut-derived chemistry. We've tested it on cast iron, on baking sheets, on greasy pots after frying chicken. It works.
